What began in 2016 as a community-driven effort to help local students pursue higher education has grown into one of Rocky Mount’s most exciting annual fundraising events. Hosted by the Rotary Club of Rocky Mount, Tackle the Tar brings together businesses, sponsors, volunteers, families, and participants for a unique 5K obstacle course race built around a meaningful mission: Play in the Mud and Send a Kid to College!
Over the years, Tackle the Tar has become much more than a race. Featuring challenging obstacles, mud pits, friendly competition, and family fun, the event unites the community in support of educational opportunities for deserving students. Every dollar raised goes toward college scholarships, helping students attend Edgecombe Community College, Nash Community College, and North Carolina Wesleyan University. Through the generosity of sponsors, runners, and community supporters, the event has raised and awarded more than $825,000 in scholarships.
In 2027, Tackle the Tar proudly celebrates its 10th year of making a difference in the Rocky Mount community. This milestone honors the countless volunteers, sponsors, participants, and supporters who have helped turn a muddy day of fun into a lasting investment in students’ futures.
As we celebrate a decade of impact, we look forward to continuing this tradition, creating new memories, and helping even more local students take the next step toward their college dreams.
