Information About the Race



On Saturday, May 19, 2018, the Rocky Mount Rotary Club is hosting a 13323594_1737465619798430_6899351292898425527_oTACKLE THE TAR mud run and fun day at the Sports Complex.  The first heat begins at 9:00 A.M. and festivities will continue until noon.

There’s a 5K OBSTACLE COURSE RACE that starts at the Rocky Mount Sports complex and courses through historic Battle Park and the E.B. Grain Company property.  It comes complete with a MUD PIT and 15+ OBSTACLES to overcome.  All racers will receive: T-shirt, medal, one free beer (if over 21), and goodie bag.  See FAQ for more information. Suggestion: Don’t wear your Sunday best to run the course!

RUN FOR A GOOD CAUSE since proceeds from Tackle the Tar will be used to fund scholarships for our local colleges.

Suggestion: Run with the idea that you’re young adults to college.

Note on Pricing: Only race participants need to register and pay.  The event is FREE to spectators.  We welcome you to invite your friends and family to enjoy the music & festivities and watch you race.  Spectators will only need cash for parking and food and goods that you choose to purchase from vendors.  Read our FAQ page for more details.

1 Mile Kids Obstacle Race

A special 1 Mile Kids Obstacle Race will take place at 11:15 A.M. This race will include many of the same perks of the regular 5K race, including a T-Shirt and Medal. There will be 8+ obstacles designed with kids in mind. Tickets for the 1 Mile Kids Obstacle Race are also available for purchase through EventBrite. Take advantaged of reduced prices by registering early. The cost will be $20 on race day.


New K9 & Their Human Obstacle Course

Our last heat of the day is a special heat at 11:30 A.M. for dogs and their owners. Proceeds will benefit Odin’s Orphan’s, here in Rocky Mount. (See for details). Runners will recieve the same medals and perks as our regular heats (shirt, beer & medal)

Additional Rules

  • Open to anyone 14+. 1 dog per runner
  • Dogs are only allowed 1.5 hours before their heat (10AM).
  • ALL dogs must have their rabies tag on their collar (name tag is preferred)
  • Dog must be 6 months or older
  • Be sure to bring a towel for clean up after the race
  • Kids must be at least 14 or old to run with a dog (18 and under must be with adult)
  • We prefer the 4′ leash but on this event, they could go up to 6′ max
  • Dogs attending should be well-behaved, non-aggressive and not be easily intimidated or stressed by large crowds or loud noises. Dogs will experience barking, loud speaking voices, clapping, cheering and unpredictability throughout the event. We ask owners to please be considerate of these factors before registering your dog to attend our event.
  • No nose to nose contact with other dogs
  • Keep about 4’- 5’ between each dog (allow ample space for any new dog. New and some existing dogs need extra space)
  • Bring Poop Bags

Cash Prizes

We are offering cash prizes for the best performers in our competitive heats.

Our competitive heat will be limited to our competitive heats.  Cash prizes are to be determined.

Top Male

  • 1st $750 each
  • 2nd $500 each
  • 3rd $250 each

Top Females

  • 1st $750 each
  • 2nd $500 each
  • 3rd $250 each

In addition to cash prizes, we will be awarding trophies and prizes for:

  • Best Costume – Individual
  • Best Costume – Team
  • Furthest Traveled
  • Oldest to Finish
  • Youngest to Finish

For our Young Racers, we will be awarding prizes for Best Costume in our 1 Mile Kids Race for the following age groups:

  • Ages 8-9
  • Ages 10-11
  • Ages 12-13
