General Questions

Q: When and where is the race?

A: Tackle the Tar will be held on May 20, 2017 at the Bishop Stadium – adjacent to the Rocky Mount Sports Complex, located at 600 Independence Drive, Rocky Mount, NC 27804 (map).

Q: Is the Race Timed?

A: Yes! All heats will be timed.  The first two heats are competitive (9:00 AM & 9:15 AM). All runs after these heats are just for fun, but all heats will be timed.  Register today!

Q: Will there be cash prizes?

A: Yes.  To be eligible for cash prizes, participants must be 18 years of age or older, compete in one of the competitive heats (9:00 AM & 9:15 AM), and must have satisfactorily completed all obstacles. Eligibility for cash prizes will be determined by race officials.  Register today!

Q: Are Spectators allowed on the course?

A: Spectators are not allowed on the Tackle the Tar race course. However, the festival area is free and open to the public. Cheering on your runner and taking pictures in the festival and spectator viewing areas is highly encouraged. Please, no outside alcohol allowed. Feel free to bring a chair or blanket.  No personal tents, coolers or large umbrellas are allowed on the premises. For safety purposes, only registered participants, event staff and approved media will be allowed on the race course.

Q: What is the weather policy?

A: Tackle the Tar is a rain or shine event.  In the case of dangerous weather that threatens the safety of participants or volunteers, Rocky Mount Rotary Club reserves the right to postpone or cancel the event.  In the event of a cancellation, there will be no refunds. However, participants will be able to run the next Tackle The Tar event at no cost.

Q: Do you offer military discounts?

A: Yes, Tackle the Tar is glad to honor ALL (active, reserve, retired, and veteran) military personnel with a 30% off discount.  If you register using this military discount, you must produce a valid military ID when you pick up your race packet.

Q: How old do you need to be to run?

A: You must be at least 14 years old on the day of the race to run Tackle the Tar.  However, the spectator area is completely free and fun for all ages.

  • Participants ages 14-15 must run with a parent or guardian over 18, and are excluded from the competitive heats (9:00 A.M. & 9:15 A.M.).
  • Participants 16-17 may run in any heat, but must have completed a Parental Consent form (Download Here).  However, they are excluded from winning the cash prizes.
  • All other participants 18+ are free to run in any race with the completion of the Participant Waiver form (Download Here).

If you or your child do not have a photo ID, you must still provide proof of your identity and verification of your age.  (We need to know you’re old enough to run and that you are who you claim to be).  You may consider bringing a combination of the options listed below:

For identity, we will accept photocopies of you:

  • Passport
  • Student ID
  • Membership Card
  • License

For age verification, we will accept photocopies of your:

  • Birth Certificate

Day of Race

Q: Can I sign up at the event?

A: Yes!  Registration may be purchased at the event if you head to the Info Tent and pay in cash.  We only ask that you arrive an hour before your desired heat as we reserve select space in each heat for race-day registration.  You may also register through EventBrite the day of the race (additional transaction fees apply).  Prices will be $75 on race day!  T-shirt, medal, and goodie bags are not guaranteed for anyone that registers after 5/5/17.

Are kids welcome at Tackle the Tar?

Children of all ages are welcome in the festival area; however, please ensure that young children are accompanied by an adult at all times.  To compete in Tackle the Tar, participants much be at least 14 years of age.  Participants under 18 years of age on race day must be accompanied by a parent or guardian at packet pick-up to sign a waiver and release (Download Here).

Are dogs welcome at Tackle the Tar?

Yes.  However, all dogs must be on a leash.  Please be courteous to others, mindful of small children, and clean up any animal waste.

Will there be a place to wash off after the run?

Yes!  The Rocky Mount Fire Department will be there to hose you down after the race.  Also, you will have access to public restrooms onsite to change.

Am I going to experience long obstacle lines?

Not if we can help it.  It is difficult to predict when and where bottlenecks may occur.  However, we have strategically limited each heat to 100 racers or less each half hour to minimize any lines.

How early should I arrive?

The parking lot is very close.  If you arrive one hour before your heat, you will have ample time to complete registration, put on your bib, and get into your starting line.  (There may even be time for a bathroom break.)

If you are registering on race day, please arrive no less than one hour early.

Do I get a free beer?

This wouldn’t be a race without one!  You receive one free 12 ounce draft beer (ID required at check in) for all of-age participants.

Will there be food and music?

Of course!  There will be 10+ food trucks and live artists playing at the event – featuring CMT artist Bryan Mayer.  Keep checking back for our main heading band!

Will there be medical and security personnel available?

Yes! The Rocky Mount Fire and Police Department will be onsite throughout the entire day.

Parking Information

Q: Where do I park on event day?

A: Paid  onsite parking ($5 per vehicle) will be located in front of the Bishop Stadium and free overflow will be located across the Church Street at the tower building.

Q: How much does it cost?

A: Parking costs $5 per car.  Cash only.

Q: Can I park a bus, RV, or other large vehicle?

A: Yes.  You will be required to pay $5 for every standard car parking spot that your vehicle occupies.  Cash only.

Packet Pickup and Gear Check

Q: How do I pick up my Race Packet?

A: Race packets and materials must be picked up on site.  They will not be shipped to participants.

  • Packet pick-up will be available on-site, beginning one hour prior to the first heat of the day.
  • Your packet includes your race bib with safety pins, t-shirt, and other promotional items.
  • You’ll need your photo ID* to pick up your packet as well as a signed and dated copy of the participant waiver.  We have copies on site but to save time, print and complete the waiver at home by clicking (Download Here) to download.

*If you or your child do not have a photo ID, you must still provide proof of your identity and verification of your age.  (We need to know you’re old enough to run and that you are who you claim to be). You may consider bringing a combination of the options listed below.

Q: Will there be a Gear Check available to store belongings?

A: Yes.  There will be a Gear Check tent available for runners to store belongings while out on the course.  The cost of Gear Check is $5, payable at the tent (Cash only).  Racers will be able to place bagged personal belongings anywhere with an attendant.  After hitting The Battleground, runners will return to the Gear Check tent to claim their belongings and will be required to verify their tag number with an attendant before exiting.  Tackle the Tar/Rocky Mount Rotary is not responsible for any lost, stolen or damaged items.

Q: What do I need to bring for Race Day?

A: The following items will be required on race day:

  • Your photo ID*
  • $5 cash for parking
  • $5 cash for Gear Check (optional)
  • Appropriate footwear is highly recommended!  Note: You will get muddy
  • Spending money for extra beer, food trucks, entertainment, apparel and merchandise
  • A signed copy of our Participant Waiver (Download Here) and/or Parental Consent form (Download Here).

Q: What items are prohibited?

A: The following items will not be permitted at Tackle the Tar:

  • No outside food or beverage items
  • No tents or canopies
  • No alcohol or flasks
  • No coolers
  • No glass containers
  • No illegal substances, drugs, or drug paraphernalia
  • No illegal or unauthorized vending
  • No knives or weapons of any kind
  • No flammable lanterns or fire of any kind
  • No fireworks or any types of explosives
  • No skateboards, scooters, or personalized motor vehicles
  • No outside cans or cups
  • No soliciting

Course and Obstacle Information

Q: What if I cannot complete an Obstacle?

A: Participants are not obligated to attempt or complete any obstacle, including water obstacles or crossings.  If participants are not comfortable attempting or able to complete any type of obstacle, they may go around it.

However, if you are competing in the competitive heats for the cash prizes, you must successfully complete all obstacles to be qualified.

Q: Can I run the course twice in one day?

A: If you think you’re tough enough to tackle the trails more than once, then you must register and pay for multiple heats.  You may only run once per registration.

Q: I’m unable to swim.  How deep are the water obstacles?

A: There may be water obstacles or water crossings at Tackle the Tar in which you participate.  The existence, location, and depth of the water obstacles will vary, though most water obstacles are anywhere from 3-6 feet deep.  If you are not comfortable attempting or able to complete a water obstacle (or any other obstacle on the course), you are always free to go around it.
